I propose to use whatever authority exists in the office of the President to end segregation in the District of Columbia, including the Federal Government, and any segregation in the Armed Forces. I wanted to get to know them better, to see what it was they had that put them in charge. Her harrowing tale describes the horrors she experienced that first year. Kennedy Book Award that same year. Melba Pattillo was born on December 7, 1941, in Little Rock Pulaski County.
