The whole arrangement includes a diffuser and a volute casing along with the impulse turbine. For the valve to operate smoothly and quietly, an arrangement must be provided to cre- ate a cushioning effect on the valve travel. The beveled seating surfaces on the valve and seat tend to form a tighter seal than the flat seating surfaces on a disk valve. Although these pumps are of close-clearance design, they are not compres- sors and can vapor-bind; that is, a large amount of gas trapped below the discharge valve will compress and absorb the entire displacement of the pump. The diaphragm is connected to a motor-driven eccentric or cam by means of a connecting rod.
Once the pump has completed the upstroke, the cycle repeats itself in reverse. Progressive cavity pumps are single-screw types typically used in shallow wells or at the surface. If rotary pumps are operated at high speeds, the fluids cause erosion, which eventually causes enlarged clearances that liquid can pass through, which reduces efficiency.
