At this point, Katniss has a serious breakdown. Coin adds, however, that should Katniss deviate from her Mockingjay role, immunity will be revoked and all tributes, including Katniss, will be subject to the laws of District 13. She, Gale, and Finnick are assigned to a special unit that will be filmed during combat and turned into more propos. During another live Capitol programming, in which Snow and a very battered and fragile-looking Peeta appear together, Beetee is able to break through the Capitol feed to broadcast clips of the rebel propos.
The relationship between Peeta and Katniss remains an issue. The inclusion of this death is important: it shows that, in war, even our heroine is forced to commit atrocities — in this case, the murder of a defenceless, unarmed civilian — in order to survive. Katniss tells the others she has a secret mission to kill President Snow, and they follow her on what turns out to be a suicide mission. During the ensuing battle, many innocent children die. Coin orders everyone in District 13 to retreat into bunkers.
In the epilogue, Katniss shares that she ended up with Peeta because she needed his faith and loyalty more than Gale's inner fire since she has enough of her own. Coin made it look like it was Snow's bomb so Katniss would think Snow killed her sister, thus making Katniss want to kill Snow. Over there was the kitchen table. Resolution: Katniss wakes up in the medical facility, where she is told that Peeta has essentially been brainwashed into wanting to kill her. Just as Katniss and her team are leaving District 8, another airstrike arrives, targeting the hospital. The rebels agree to this plan, and the next day, a bomb goes off in the Nut, causing many innocent people to die. But when Peeta sees Katniss, he tries to strangle her.
Katniss and Gale disobey orders and climb to the rooftop on a nearby building to shoot down the bombers. He also threatens to kill Katniss's friends and family if she ever took action to rebel again, or didn't marry Peeta in the Capitol but she never even tried to rebel the first time! In return, she gets immunity for her friends and permission to kill Snow. Soon, Peeta and Katniss return to District 12, get married and have children. Suddenly, Paylor cries out that there is a government air raid underway. Prim is killed and Katniss is badly burned. A committee assessing the condition of the coal mines. So, while District 13 has thrived, but it's also pretty creepy.
The main significance of this change is that we get to see the effect her disobedience has on Coin. Snow's direct adversary is President Coin of District 13. Beginning with ashes in the first section, the novel progresses with many instances of more death: the physical death of those who die in war, as well as the emotional death of loved ones stricken by their losses. Wait, we thought the rebels were fighting to end cruel practices like the Hunger Games? Katniss is badly wounded again. More maudlin than the first two books in the series, Mockingjay is also the most violent and bloody and, based on the actions and statements of its characters, its most overtly antiwar — though not so much that it distracts from a series conclusion that is nearly as shocking, and certainly every bit as original and thought provoking, as The Hunger Games. Only Pollux, Gale, Cressida, Peeta, and Katniss manage to escape alive. During the broadcast, he alerts District 13 of an imminent attack and is severely beaten.
Upon talking, however, they realize neither one of them could have made any other choice. Katniss and Gale have been friends and hunting partners for five years and are so close that they need not use words to communicate. But in the process to become the Mockingjay, she has to go through brutal training and make difficult decisions and sacrifices, some more heartbreaking than others. They both think the other failed to protect Peeta in the Quarter Quell arena. The acting, the scripts, the costumes, the make-up, the cameras… For President Snow's very public execution, Katniss even has her prep team and Effie Trinket back. She also has to decide if she should kill Peeta when they were trying to raze the Capitol because he was not completely sure of himself and who he was. In part because of Katniss's vote, the answer is yes — the Hunger Games will start again.
Sadly, the bombs killed the wall of innocent Capitol children and Prim. Katniss agrees to be the Mockingjay, the face of the rebellion, to rally those fighting for the cause, but fulfilling this role becomes increasingly difficult as the Capitol uses Peeta against her. To her horror, she realizes that this girl is Primrose, her own sister. And only Peeta can give me that. Coin proposes that the Hunger Games be banned forever, but that first, one final Hunger Games be held for the citizens of the Capitol, who have previously been exempted from the vicious tradition.
Peeta claims that the rebels are causing mayhem, and, seeming to speak directly to Katniss, he asks her if she really trusts the rebel leaders. It is now where the rebellion is headquartered. This means that they will not be active in battle. It wasn't okay with either of you. Even the food is boring, yucky but nutritious slop. The feed cuts out just as Peeta is hit to the floor, his blood splattering the tile. I quickly learned that the only way I could make myself close the covers would be to break off in the middle of a chapter.
Peeta was rescued - but, after months of torture and mental conditioning, he was no longer himself, violently attacking Katniss upon sight and attempting to strangle her. Right before they go out into the field, Peeta's assigned to their unit too. There Katniss meets Commander Paylor, an important rebel leader. Later she learns that she was acquitted during her trial, and she's sent back to the ruined District 12, along with Haymitch and later Peeta. I dont know why exactly. However, its people rallied and used the limited power they had gathered — because they lived in a nuclear weapon production zone — to stay alive and slowly, but surely, plan a revolution. From the beginning of the story, it becomes clear that Katniss Everdeen is destined to be the Mockingjay.
