Behind his facade as a trustworthy ensign and friend, Iago is a multilayered, deceptive and manipulative villain, concocting chaos and causing mishaps to other characters for revenge. He is full of jealousy, greed, selfishness, and hatred. Does he reveal himself as being sexist and misogynist? Throughout the play, Iago is able to uses this character flaw to his advantage by slowly planning his own triumph of evil and watching the demise of these other characters. Thus credulous fools are caught. In any case, a great villain must leave the reader with a respect for their methods and a question about their motives. Iago is a pure evil, manipulative villain because of the actions he expressed throughout the play, as well as the way he deceived other characters, and the compassion he showed for revenge. Through some carefully thought-out words and actions, Iago is able to manipulate others to do things in a way that benefits and moves him closer to his own goals.
Iago, in the play Othello, is a very intriguing villain. He constantly uses his good reputation for dishonorable purposes. At first, it seems Iago is only jealous of Othello because he has chosen Cassio for lieutenant instead of Iago. He is envious of Michael Cassio and suspects that Othello has wronged his honor; but his malignancy is all out of proportion to even his alleged motives through which he shows his ambivalence of nature. What makes this possible is the trust that Othello has towards him, which is quite ironic and instructive. Characters like Iago were good in the choice of costumes they wore and their selection of choosing the right thing to say at the perfect timing.

Eventually Iago successfully manipulates Roderigo to his purposes, and he and Cassio fight, leaving the gullible Roderigo dead. Likewise, the antagonist is portrayed as evil and villainous, and seeks to destroy the moral protagonist. It is because of his triumph, we see a tragedy he forms as he plays on human vulnerabilities, weaknesses and insecurities. Therefore Iago is so motivated to his evil plot; he assumes that if Cassio still remains to live he will continue outshine him. Most of us, even if we were to imagine ourselves as evil would probably also imagine a motivation for being so: a lust for power, greed for money, for revenge, or just anger about our painful or disappointing experiences.
The personalities of Othello, Cassio, and Desdemona stand the test of time, and can be seen in people still today. The character of Othello gives his to the play and the main plot revolves around his relationship with his wife Desdemona. He convinces him that the gold and jewels will be given to Desdemona as a proclamation of his love when in actuality, Iago plans to keep it for himself. He displays a duplicitous character, honest and kind on the outside but truly a pure, evil and malignant person on the inside. What I think made this play great was that it has a villain behind the motive, which makes the play more interesting for me. Although Iago's true motives cannot be determined, some motives could be jealousy, the enjoyment of seeing people suffer, or power.
From this statement in his soliloquies, many come to a conclusion that Iago is in fact the stage villain in the play. Eventually Iago manipulates Roderigo to his death bed. Across the history of literature, we as readers have encountered many villains whom intrigue us. This particular play of Shakespeare is very universal and timeless. Iago's jealousy towards Othello quickly turns into a jealousy toward Cassio too because Othello appointed Cassio as lieutenant instead of Iago. This obsession causes him to unquestioningly believe anything Iago says in hopes of getting Desdemona.
His ability to say the right things at the right time is what makes him such a successful Villain. Iago uses this to his advantage, even though Iago uses Roderigo to ruin Cassio and Othello, he gets some amusement by watching Roderigo prance around and go nuts over Desdemona. With great skill, Iago is able to arrange a conversation between Cassio and Bianca so that Othello thinks Cassio is discussing his wife. Iago might say things that suggest what his motive is, but he soon contradicts himself with another suggestion making it extremely difficult to understand him. And when a situation becomes to over whelming, do we project our thought and feelings on to our peers? Shakespeare created Iago as a truly selfish villain.

Even when predictable the portrayal of the concepts of reversal of fortune,. Not only that, but he also manipulatesā¦ the audience sees Iago as a puzzle. He has many disguises and secrets that he hides from everyone and his acting skills come in handy when he works to destroy the happiness that many people have in this story. This is when he easily believes the lies spread by Iago concerning the purported affair between Desdemona and Cassio. Through some carefully thought-out words and actions, Iago is able to manipulate others to do things in a way that benefits him and gets him closer to his goals.
