It is unthinkable that Harsha, the emperor ruling over almost whole of Northern India, could have ruled for more than four decades without issuing coins. His hostilities with Valabhis ended through a matrimonial alliance. Harsha's Nagananda is his most important play. The title Siladitya was not uncommonly assumed by, or given to rulers of that period. Prayaga and Varanasi are highly praised by the pilgrim for their wealth and prosperity. The country of Ahichchhatra was mainly an agricultural one. To that point, the romance of the fairy prince and princess is quite conventional. As regent, he took the title Kumara Prince Siladitya Sun in Virtues. He himself was a skilled poet and wrote two palace dramas, Ratnavalī and Priyadarshikā.
It can be argued that Harsha did not issue his own coins and allowed the use of the coins of his predecessors and those of his brother-in-law, Grahavarman and his predecessors. Though his court biographer, Bāna, portrays Harsha as his father's choice in succession, other sources indicate that his elder brother, Rājya Vardhana, actually inherited the throne. The Priyadarsika appears to be the earliest of Harsha's plays.
