Pizza dough and cake batter both work okay. Pour in enough batter to just fill. I used the plain yogurt thinned with milk and subbed half the flour with whole wheat and they turned out perfectly. Bake until the waffles are golden and crisp to the touch. All I could taste was the baking soda.
The batter is thin, for sure, so I filled them to the top, flipped and cooked for four minutes. My most favorite time I ate these was during each of my pregnancies when I could not get enough to eat at about 5-6 months. I mixed everything in alternating between liquids and dry ingredients. These are fantastic - the only change I would make is to add 2 tsp vanilla in the morning along with the eggs and baking soda. So when I discovered the raised waffle I was in heaven. There were gazillions of these manufactured back in the day and I suspect plenty of them are showing up at thrift shops and garage sales.
Mix eggs, milk, and oil in a large bowl. In case you want to try my alteration: I mixed together all of the ingredients, barring the egg whites, the night before. The plates are not removable, but there is virtually no clean up. It heats evenly top and bottom and makes 4 delicious waffles in 3-4 minutes. I have used half the butter and they are just as tasty, but do not brown as much. The interior of these belgian style waffles are so airy and light, I just love them.

However I just remembered that the inlaws have one I know this because the first Christmas I spent with them they hyped that we would have home made waffles. Thank you to others for leaving comments about how they worked in your waffle maker. I use yogurt to activate baking soda, although I've never had anything fail to rise when I use only milk. I thought my water and milk temp were ok. Do you have your defibrillator? Just put the yeast in with all the other ingredients.
This is a great recipe. Bake until golden and crisp. Plenty of toppings are available, though, as are 16 seats for those who want to sit and eat and enjoy an espresso. Add 2 cups of hot water with 3 bouillon cubes dissolved in water, mix well and bake covered at 375 degrees for 30min. Love just looking at them!!! Also cooks them up like a dream—all kinds.
You deep-fry the yeasty dough often studded with raisins and top with powdered sugar. Upon finishing them this morning my son, who is notoriously picky, asked me if I could make more tomorrow. You may find one like it. Before you cook the first batch oil the plates generously and allow to get completely hot. Definitely a delicate texture to these. I also browned the butter. What you said about waffle irons.
The hole-maker tops were sticking out of the batter. My mom made tons of waffles when I was growing up. Still tasted not only great, but the same. They also flipped to a flat side to become a sandwich grill. I also read your about me and can totally identify with the small kitchen! To cook with a cast iron waffle iron, you place the iron over your stove burner. Be sure to preheat the irons, both sides, and brush on plenty of butter to begin with.
